Herman “Vaughn” Johnson, age 80 of Halifax, NS passed away suddenly at home on Wednesday, November 29th, 2023. Born in 1943, he was the only son of Herman and Ella Johnson, Upper Stewiacke.

Vaughn is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Joyce Johnson (Bagnall), sons Paul (Jessica) and Darryl (Audra) and daughter Sonya (Chris) Merrick. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren Lily (Nate) Johnson, Ashley (Jeremy) Jones, Courtney (Drew) Janes, Jack Johnson and Luke Merrick, as well as his great-grandchildren Dean and Taylor. Vaughn was predeceased by his parents and his daughter-in-law Lynn Glencross. Family was his world and being surrounded by them brought him great joy. He was a private man and kept his circle small, not realizing the impact he had on every person he encountered along the way. Specifically, he truly cherished the good times and travels heʼs had with his dearest friends.

Vaughn settled with his family in Lower Sackville in 1969, building friendships and foundations that would last a lifetime. He was actively involved in Kinsmen in the early days and was President in 1974-75. Vaughn coached numerous young kids in both hockey and baseball, and still to this day those boys come up to him and say he had a kind heart and was always a voice of reason. In 1980 Vaughn started the Bedford Junior B hockey team with John Sperdakes. Shortly after that he moved on to join the Halifax Lions Junior A team as a Director, developing the program and working with the players, coaches and management. In more recent years he shifted his interests to the Halifax Mooseheads and was a season ticket holder for the last 20+ years, attending home games and watching away games from the comfort of his couch. Vaughnʼs passion for the Montreal Canadiens and LA Dodgers never waivered, hopefully he has a chance to meet his idol Jean Belliveau on the other side.

A career man, Vaughn never wanted to stop working; his expertise and professionalism in the hardware industry spoke for itself. 2023 was a bucket list year for Vaughn, finally retiring from a long and successful career as an Architectural Hardware Consultant (AHC), getting himself a “muscle” car to bomb around in and taking three final trips this fall, one with each of his children and their spouses. His bucket list was fulfilled

Vaughnʼs strength during his battle with Multiple Myeloma for the last 8 years was admirable and he always had hope. His family would like to thank Dr. Darrell White and the nursing team at the Hematology clinic for their support and encouragement, calling him their “Rockstar”.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 5th at Atlantic Funeral Home, Lower Sackville, NS, 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Cremation has already taken place. A private family burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Multiple Myeloma Canada.
